Hello 2012!

Happy New Year!

We are so grateful for all our clients from 2011 and the professional relationships that grew stronger and the new ones we formed.  I feel quite lucky to be around such a pool of talent. We ended our year with a wonderful party for our supporters and the professionals that are part of the Vermont Wedding Parlor. We cannot thank everyone enough for attending and bringing along a gift for a child in need. We were able to donate over 30 gifts!! The generosity was overwhelming.

The horizon for 2012 is looking bright! We have quite a few projects (what is new?) in the works and we’ll be rolling out the news as each progresses.

Vermont Enchanted Forest Wedding by Storied Events and Nancy Cohn Photography

We are excited about the New Year and all wonderful, creative happenings in our offices! Here are just a few of the projects we are working on;

- A redesign of the Vermont Wedding Parlor and its associated website. We were almost ready to launch, but have decided to go in a new direction. News on this soon!

- A very exciting and much needed overhaul and update to the Storied Events website.

- We’ve added a few new faces and personalities to our team. We’re excited to introduce them as they come aboard!      (You’ve already met the recently wed Kate!)

We’re working at several new venues this year as well as some of our favorites. We are ever-so excited for the beautiful color palates and the design inspirations.

It is sure to be a year full of sparkle, and pretty things!

Cheers.

Apple Pie & Eggnog

Hope everyone had a perfectly scrumptious weekend!

With the holidays just around the corner, I have had food on the brain in a big big way. Whether it’s dreaming about next Thursday’s gluttony or fantasizing about all the baking i will do this holiday season, I just can’t get enough. My virtual recipe box is filled to the brim!

‘Tis the season of love and laughter and Christmas cookies. It’s the most wonderful time of year because it’s a season all about love and togetherness and gathering the people you love most and celebrating all the goodness in life. (Ok, it’s also a little bit about candy canes.)

In many ways, weddings are the same thing. They are about gathering all the people you love most in the world and celebrating all the goodness in life. So, why not have the food at your wedding be just as memorable as your grandmother’s apple pie and your dad’s secret eggnog recipe. It’s all about making memories. And we all know the quickest way to someone’s heart….

So, have fun with it! Make it your own! If you and your sweetie love candy, have a candy buffet. If your first trip together was to Italy, serve pizza and gelato. If he proposed to you over left over sweet potato soup, serve it in soup shooters during your cocktail hour. If your sister makes world famous whoopee pies, serve them up! If you love Vermont, go local and have a cheese spread and samples of your favorite microbrews. Whatever it is, enjoy and make it yours. Your wedding is about YOU and sharing your story and your favorite things with all of those who love you!

Some of my favorites…don’t these ideas just make your heart skip and your mouth water?

soup shooters
engagement soup shooters

whoopie

whoopeee!!!!!

donuts

offer a late night donut buffet and send your guests home with breakfast!

pies

not a fan of wedding cake? try mini pies – apple, pumpkin, cherry!

burgers & fries

mini burgers + cones filled with fries = cocktail hour heaven.

ice cream

we all scream for ice cream!

What about you? Any favorite foods that made their way into your wedding?

Just remember: One cannot think well, love well, sleep well, if one has not dined well. {Virginia Wolff}

Wedding Wednesday: An Introduction

We do

Happy Wedding Wednesday, all you lovely readers!

My name is Kate, and I am an event planner with Storied Events. I was beyond honored to join the team last year, and am even more excited to have the chance to blog and get to know you all electronically. I will be spending this Vermont winter sharing a little bit about myself and all the things I love about weddings.

This last year was a crazy one (in the best possible way) for us at Storied Events, and it was a crazy one on the homefront for me as well. I went from being a girl who loved planning weddings to one who was tasked with planning her own. This time last year, I thought I had died and gone to heaven!

welcome bags

It all went according to plan (and I do love a good plan) The love of my life bought a ring, asked my dad, and popped the question on the most romantic of nights. And mere moments after that sparkly ring was placed on my finger and I had wiped the tears from my eyes, he sighed a big sigh of relief and said with a smile, “Well, my job here is done…it’s your turn! Happy planning, honey!”

How happy was I? I was planning a wedding – MY wedding – to a man who knew how much I would love it. And so it began, I poured over wedding blogs (like this one!) and spent a small fortune on wedding magazines. I got rid of the codename on my desktop “Wedding” folder. I made spreadsheets and lists
Mom.

But somewhere, not long after the proposal, something unexpected happened – I changed my mind. I wanted nothing to do with planning my own wedding. I am not sure what triggered it, but all of a sudden the realization that our wedding was much more than just spreadsheets and the dessert buffet and first dance songs was overwhelming. It was about combining two families with different values and beliefs. It was about gathering all the people we loved most in the world in one room and crossing our fingers that they all got along. It meant spending money. It meant making hard decisions. It meant not being able to please everyone. The planner in me was on overload and the bride in me was in distress.

The following months were a roller coaster filled with highs (the dress, the stationery) and lows (the guest list, the weather) invites However, with the endless support of my amazing mother, words of wisdom and laughter from a few fantastic friends, the occasional reality check from my soon-to-be husband, and lots and lots of wine, we made it. And it was amazing.

So, at 2am on our wedding night, as my Mr. and I walked barefoot down a Vermont Main Street back to our hotel, I was the one breathing a sigh of relief and saying, “Honey, my job here is done…” And I said it with a smile. For so many years, I thought that my wedding night would be a sad one, because all the dresses and the planning and the romance would have come and gone. But as it turns out, it was the happiest night of my whole life. In a beautiful tent full of all of our favorite people, I married the love of my life. All the planning and the heartache and the stress was more than worth it. And I never even noticed the dessert buffet.

We did!

Plus, I still have a few party dress occasions left in me and I get to fall asleep next to my husband everynight. And the icing on the cake is that I still get to plan pretty weddings – but I get to do it from the sidelines where I belong!

Until next time!
XOXO
The New Mrs.

Vermont Wedding Venues Available due to Irene Cancellations

I am rarely left speechless. Early this week I found myself without words, eyes pooling and frankly in shock.  The mass destruction surrounding the effects of rain Irene dumped into our waters is unfathomable. The roads in central Vermont I drive on to visit venues or when traveling for events are just gone.  The people and places I love so much are in need of help and I cannot do anything to assist them – I cannot even get to them if I tried.

After the shock, the planner in my brain switched on. What do we do in emergencies… think clearly, form a plan and put it into action. And that is exactly what most of us are doing right now – acting on plans. Rebuilding and focusing on the future. Accidents, catastrophes and random acts of fate happen everyday – people survive and weddings WILL survive. Most importantly weddings in Vermont will survive, grow and be better than before! We encourage couples seeking Vermont Destination Weddings to still come and enjoy all we have to offer… we are an incredible state with amazing talents and we all pull together to make magical events happen.

But for now, there are couples displaced due to flooding and weddings have been cancelled or postponed.  There is not much we can do, but we can certainly help. If you’re wedding venue has suffered severe damage or roads to the ceremony or reception site are closed, we suggest the following:

- IF the venue is capable of postponing the wedding and you okay with this, family and friends will certainly understand and you have another year to plan! If you must get married, have a small, intimate civil service with family and close friends and have the big party at your original venue in 2012.

-IF the venue is cancelling your wedding, find out if there is another site their kitchen staff and catering staff can work at. This way it might not be the exact venue you wanted, but you would have the same service, food and beverage you were planning on.

- IF your venue is closing all together and there are no options for you to postpone, or you do not want to, we are starting to compile a list of venues that are available, their open dates  and contact information.  These venues are more than willing to jump in and host a spectacular day.

*Please note Northern Vermont did not suffer much  -if at all road damage and all wedding venues are operational.

Here is the list to start, we hope to add to this as we move along and hear about availability from venues. (Forgive the formatting – we just want to get the list started and out.)

- Cambridge, VT  – Boyden Barn -contact: Lauri Boyden at www.boydenfarm.com

- Jay Peak , VT – Jay Peak Resort Contact Rob Hodgkins  – rhodgkins@jaypeakresort.com

Sheehan and Andy, Vermont Real Wedding

We just adore this wedding and this couple.  The beautiful location helped quite a bit too!

Vermont Wedding Planner Storied Events

The gorgeous invitation suite was designed by one of our favorite designers, Mr. Boddington.

The rehearsal dinner was held in a small barn on the property.  Adorable containers of hand picked flowers and mason jars filled with lemonade adorned with festive tags and sweet sayings greeted guests.  The bbq dinner, catered by Maple Street Catering, was the perfect start to kick off the weekend events.

It is the time of the year again when we are busy with inspiration for printed materials and specifically, Save the Dates!  I am a little obsessed with wood veneer, vintage postcards and boxed save the dates! Here are some of the favorites I’ve seen lately.

Some quick Save the Date notes:

1. Before sending out save the dates, make sure your room blocks are in place, your website is completed (if you are doing one) and it is a good idea to have your gift registry completed (if save the dates are going out close to engagement parties).

2. Send save the dates out 5 – 9 months prior to the wedding and as soon as possible if you are having a destination wedding on a holiday weekend.

3. Send save the dates to only those you are inviting to your wedding.

4. Include as much information about your destination as possible. In addition to the date and place, be sure to note room blocks, airlines that service your destination and any other pertinent details that will make your guests experience easier. It will also save you from a ton of emails and phone calls.  By simply including your wedding website address, you can direct guests to all the information you need. Just be sure it is kept up to date.

Vermont Destination Wedding

We loved this Southern Vermont Wedding! Emily and Sam worked together as a team to produce all these lovely details.  I wish we could take credit for more, but I’d have to say – this couple really had it all together.  The bride created all the napkins, along with the place cards.  Each napkin was different, I think there were 5-7 patterns all together, along with die cut cards with each guests name written on top.  Sam, the groom, made all the table signs by burning special places into the wood. To see a few of the other incredible details you’ll have to jump over to the incredible Amanda Herzberger’s blog at Orchard Cove Photography to see the REAL photos (the ones on here are mine!).

We were thrilled to work with new vendors for this wedding:
Reception – Ekwanok Country Club
Florist – Bondville Bloomist
Band – Cracked Ice
Emily’s Dress – Modern Trousseau
Bridesmaid’s Dresses – Jenny Yoo
Rentals – Rain or Shine out of Saratoga, NY
And loved working with a few our favs!
Emily’s Hair & Makeup – Ria St. Pierre
Invitations – Molly Myers at Paisley Quill

And a visit to Orchard Cove’s blogsite will show you the final masterpiece for their wedding, Emily and Sam’s queensberry matted album created by Amanda @ Orchard Cove Photography. You can also stop by and see their album in our wedding salon in Stowe!
